Frequently Asked Questions

Question:  How can I best help my child to do well at school?
Answer:  Show them school is important.  Ask them questions about their day.  Remind them that school is important.  Help them get plenty of rest. Good attendance and getting to school on time, are also very important to your child's success in school.

Question:  How do I find about how my child is behaving at school?
Answer:  Sign up for a Dojo parent account.  Use the information sent home with your child to link to their account.  If you have misplaced that information, contact me.

Question:  I am worried about the testing my child has to take in 3rd grade.  Where can I find information about the testing?
Answer:  We work hard to prepare your child here at school for the tests they will take.  The Indiana Department of Education website has information about ISTEP and IREAD testing.  Use the links below to access the website.  https://www.doe.in.gov/assessment

Question:  Why is my child learning about _______ at school?

Question:  How can I best help my child with reading this year?
Answer:  Read with them.  Talk to them about the books they are reading and have discussions about them.  Talk about their answers.  Ask them what from the book made them think that.  Have them practice writing down and even typing their answers too.

Question:  How can I best help my child with math this year?
Answer:  Read their Friday journals to see what they are studying.  Watch the papers they are bringing home.  Are they having trouble with a particular concept?  Review or practice the concept with them.  Make a note and review the concept again with them at another time.

Question:  Kids are learning very differently they I did as a child.  I can't help them still can I?
Answer:  Yes!  You can still help a lot!  If there is a "new" way something is taught, ask your child about it.  Have them teach you!  Still don't understand?  Ask!  I would be happy to show you the new ways.  You might even like some of them!

Question:  Can we practice our math facts at home?
Answer:   Yes!  Practicing them at home is so helpful!  Ask your child which operation they are working on right now.  If they are having trouble with certain facts, post them places in the house to practice.

Question: How do you celebrate birthdays in the classroom?
Answer:  We celebrate all of the birthdays for the month together.  Information will be sent home when it is time to celebrate.

Question:  Will my child have a lot of homework this year?
Answer:  Your child will have 100 minutes of RAH (Reading At Home) each week.  They will also have a vocabulary test each Friday.  If they are getting behind in class, they may bring home additional work occasionally.

Question:  What are Friday Journals?
Answer:  Friday Journals take place of a classroom newsletter.  There will be a section written by me that gives you information.  There will also be a section from your child as well.  They are expected to bring it to you to sign and bring it back on Monday.  Please consider writing back to your child and even asking them questions about things they have written.
